Hiccoughs or hiccups are caused when the chest cavity gets suddenly contracted due to the irritation of the diaphragm. The diaphragm is the muscular partition that divides the chest and the abdomen. Its contraction leads to the sound box (larynx) to shut temporarily, producing the characteristic hic sound of the hiccough.
The exact cause of hiccoughs is not known to medical science. But Ayurveda holds the gastrointestinal tract responsible for them. They can be caused due to minor problems such as flatulence and constipation. In such cases, hiccoughs are not serious and they can be taken care of easily. But hiccoughs that are caused due to chronic conditions must be considered with great care.
Treatment:
1. There are many home remedies for hiccups. Holding your breath is one of them. Others find relief in drinking cold water, gargling while holding one's breath, coughing, sneezing, putting a pinch of salt on the back of the tongue, breathing into a paper bag or a sharp yank on the tongue. Being startled can also stop hiccups in some people.
2. Touching a spoon against the uvula repeatedly while you try to breathe in, breathing into a bag, drinking water from the back side of a glass, massaging your neck, pulling on your tongue, sudden fright, pressing on your eyeball, or holding your breath.
3. In case of children with hiccoughs, a spoonful of peanut butter or honey is a good remedy. It should be swallowed at once, without retaining it in the mouth. Alternatively, a spoonful of curds sweetened with sugar can also be given to children.

Your hiccups should be gone. Wasn't that cool? And you are not out one red cent!
6. Another commonly used herb for treating hiccups is black pepper. Inhale small quantity of black pepper powder. This will result in sneezing which is a fierce movement of respiratory tract. Hence putting an end to hiccups.

But everyone is different, and everyone's hiccups are different, so there is no cure-all that will work for every case of hiccups every single time.
8. Everyone has a favorite hiccup remedy: touching a spoon against the uvula repeatedly while you try to breathe in, breathing into a bag, drinking water from the back side of a glass, massaging your neck, pulling on your tongue, sudden fright, pressing on your eyeball, or holding your breath.
