Tips to overcome Acidity

It’s surprising how many people are laid low by high acidity. Over the counter prescriptions may help but they sometimes leave behind a sensation of extreme discomfort. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disorder (GERD) is a condition in which stomach contents, including acid, back up (reflux) into the esophagus, causing inflammation and damage to the esophagus. Basically, acid is needed for digestion but some people secrete more than necessary. This irritates the duodenum and the stomach linings. It may even lead to ulcers in the stomach. The treatment of GERD is not clear cut but there are few things worth considering.

1. Often a glass of milk is suggested as a temporary measure, to neutralize the acid. This is not always suitable, and certainly not on a regular basis, as dairy produce can create its own digestive problems. It may be helpful to avoid solids for up to 24 hours after a bad bout of acid heartburn. Using a hot compress over the abdomen can relieve pains. Avoid coffee, alcohol, tobacco, chocolate, pastries or spicy foods for at least a couple of days, and if prone to this complaint, then try to slowly cut them out.

2. Digestive disturbances generally respond very well indeed to herbal treatment, and acid dyspepsia can be improved considerably. For a temporary problem choose from the suggested herbs and use as warm teas; for repeated acid/heartburn symptoms use stronger, as infusions or as otherwise directed.

3. A comprehensive food table that shows you what foods are ok to eat, ok to eat in moderation and dangerous to eat - this table will give you the diet information you need to begin feeling better in no time!

4. Take light meals that make it easy for digestive system to quickly digest the food you eat.

5. Avoid garlic, onion, pepper, radish and cabbage

6. Slippery Elm(Ulmus fulva): This is highly soothing to the inflamed gullet or stomach, and may be taken before meals, either as tablets or by mixing 5 ml(1 tsp) of the pure powder in a little warm water- it lives up to its name as it goes down, coating and soothing the membranes.

7. Herbal tea containing spearmint (pudina) and liquorice (mulethi) are very beneficial instead of normal tea, coffee and other aerated drinks.

8. Drink plenty of water (at least 6 to 8 glasses per day) and other fluids to maintain the acid balance in the stomach

9. When suffering from acidity, drink five to eight glass of coconut water a day. This is another effective Home Remedy for Acidity.

10. Try to avoid vigorous activity for an hour or so after you have eaten, do not carry out task that require you to bend over (gardening, changing beds). Avoid lying down immediately after eating and try to eat at least 3 hours before going to bed.

11. Individuals should take less of caffeinated products so as to reduce the acidity level in the stomach. Eating less of fast foods can also help in curbing acid reflux. Secondly it is important that you have your breakfast. Studies have shown that individuals who don't have their breakfast suffer from an acid reflux.
